Today we are travelling to Campania, an area just south of Naples, Italy, via Providence, RI.  This past weekend, I had the fantastic experience of stopping at a little restaurant in Providence, RI called Enoteca Umberto.   To call it intimate would be generous.  They only have 18 seats and a prepared menu prepared by the owner’s.  The owners have a wonderful enthusiasm for the wine and food they prepare and serve.  And, best of all, he has a fantastic wine collection of bottles from Italy.

The wine we are tasting today is Angelus by Falerno del Massico Italy 2011.  It is made up of 80% of Aglianico and 20% of Piedirosso.  I have never tried the Piedirosse grape.  This grape is planted primarily in the Campania region of Italy and is used predominantly as a blending grape for Aglianico and Olivella grapes.

In the glass, the color is inky, concentrated with a deep ruby color.  The nose gets a strong cherry and tobacco aroma.

In the mouth, the taste is of ripe prunes and cherries, with a cigar-box tobacco flavor.  A soft minerality to the finish.

I paired this wine with a pistachio crusted chicken fried steak.  Beef, Venison or pasta will also go very well with this wine.
