The Holidays are here and there’s lots of eating and drinking to be had.  Today we are traveling to the central coast of California, the Santa Rita Hills. We are tasting the 2016 Seagrape Jump Up Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills, CA.

Pinot Noir is one of the most versatile grapes as well as being a finicky and difficult grape to grow.  This wine can be paired with just about anything – turkey, ham, roast beef or whatever else you are serving at your holiday table.

The Santa Rita Hills is known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  This area is not unlike Burgundy, France.  The wine region is exposed to fog and coastal breezes from the Pacific Ocean.

In the glass, the wine color is burgundy with a bluish halo color.  The smell is fresh with fruit of red courants and blueberries along with a “horse-stable” leathery smell.

In the mouth, the taste is soft, spiciness of white pepper and tart cherries, beautiful silky texture, a minerality taste with a pomegranate finish.

The wine can be enjoyed now or will age fine in your cellar.  Pair this with turkey, ham, roast beef or whatever you’re serving for your holiday cheer.

About Fred Tregaskis & Summit Wine Cellars

Fred Tregaskis first developed a passion for wine during his art school years, when he worked in the New York’s Hudson Valley vineyards. Years later, after working for a national wine magazine, he was given the opportunity to design and build a 28,000-bottle cellar for Lespinasse Restaurant at the St. Regis Hotel in New York—and in the process Summit Wine Cellars took root.

Tregaskis and Summit Wine Cellars have created dramatic custom wine cellars for clients throughout the world, from Maine to California, and Bangalore to Buenos Aries.

Tregaskis also writes about wine, conducts tastings and hosts a radio show on wine for NPR station WHDD/Robin Hood Radio based in Sharon Conn.
