A Moment In Wine Show 423 – 2015 Titus Malbec, USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Today we are traveling to California, specifically Napa Valley and the 2015 Titus Malbec.  Malbec originated in the southwest area of France from the town of Cahors.  Around 1868, Malbec was brought to Argentina, South America, where the grape has flourished.  70 percent of the Malbec produced in the world comes from Argentina.  The conditions there are perfect – sunny and dry.  The vines have to dig deep into the sand and clay soils where they soak up more of the minerals.  The sand provides good drainage.

In the glass, this wine has an opaque color with a dark purple halo around the edge of the glass.  The nose is a leathery, dark, heavy fruit such as plums, figs and currants.

In the mouth, there is lots of fruit, black pepper, and cocoa.  Not a big finish.

This wine will pair with just about anything, particularly something with funky flavors.  Try a grilled steak with lots of mushrooms and some bleu cheese.

About Fred Tregaskis & Summit Wine Cellars

Fred Tregaskis first developed a passion for wine during his art school years, when he worked in the New York’s Hudson Valley vineyards. Years later, after working for a national wine magazine, he was given the opportunity to design and build a 28,000-bottle cellar for Lespinasse Restaurant at the St. Regis Hotel in New York—and in the process Summit Wine Cellars took root.

Tregaskis and Summit Wine Cellars have created dramatic custom wine cellars for clients throughout the world, from Maine to California, and Bangalore to Buenos Aries.

Tregaskis also writes about wine, conducts tastings and hosts a radio show on wine for NPR station WHDD/Robin Hood Radio based in Sharon Conn.
