A-Moment-In-Wine-Show–Marchese di Borgosole Salice Salentino Riserva, Puglia, Italy 2016
Today we are traveling to Puglia, Italy which is the heel of Italy, the little peninsula that looks like a heel of the boot. We are tasting the Marchese di Borgosole Salice Salentino Riserva, Puglia, Italy, 2016. The Salice Salentino area is famous for its production of wine from the Negroamaro grape, which is specific to this area. Negroamaro grapes are largely found in this area with one or two vineyards in Australia and California.
Puglia has been pressured over the last few years to produce a higher quality wine. The Negroamaro grape prefers a hot, dry climate and the Mediterranean-style climate in Puglia suits this variety well. The grapes develop high levels of sugar resulting in high alcohol content for the wines.
In the glass, the color is opaque, rich and concentrated. In the nose, you get herbaceous and ripe fruit.
In the mouth, the taste is of ripe cherries and strawberries, with layers of chocolate, tobacco and a little vanilla. Gorgeous, well-balanced wine with a nice, soft tannin for the finish.
Pair this wine with a slow-roasted lamb and potatoes.
