Today we are travelling to the northern Rhone valley in France called Crozes-Hermitage.  This is one of the largest appellations of northern France and the area is noted for its Mediterranean weather which is perfect for growing Syrah grapes.

The vast majority of Syrah wines are blended with Roussanne and Marsanne grapes which are white grapes to give the Syrah more body and freshness.  By law these vineyards can blend up to 15% of white grapes with red grapes.

We’ve let the wine breathe for about 30 minutes prior to this tasting.  In the glass, the color is a dark purple or dark black concentrated purple.  A beautiful aroma of herbs, licorice, and cedar – lots of fun notes.

The taste is of leather, mushroom, earthiness with fresh berry notes of blackberry and raspberries.  This is a wonderful balanced medium-bodied red wine.  This wine could stand a little longer aging in your cellar, perhaps 1 or 2 years.

Pair this wine with all types of classic meat dishes such as veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, and roast chicken roasted, braised and grilled dishes.

About Fred Tregaskis & Summit Wine Cellars

Fred Tregaskis first developed a passion for wine during his art school years, when he worked in the New York’s Hudson Valley vineyards. Years later, after working for a national wine magazine, he was given the opportunity to design and build a 28,000-bottle cellar for Lespinasse Restaurant at the St. Regis Hotel in New York—and in the process Summit Wine Cellars took root.

Tregaskis and Summit Wine Cellars have created dramatic custom wine cellars for clients throughout the world, from Maine to California, and Bangalore to Buenos Aries.

Tregaskis also writes about wine, conducts tastings and hosts a radio show on wine for NPR station WHDD/Robin Hood Radio based in Sharon Conn.
