Today we are travelling to California, to the Contra Costa county Cline Family Cellars.  We are tasting the Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel 2017.  This wine is a pretty affordable wine with a wonderful taste that goes with just about anything, this is the perfect American wine to have in your cellar.

The ancient vines are truly ancient, arriving from Europe over 100 years ago.  This vineyard practices dry-farming which means that the vines aren’t irrigated, relying only on rain.  Due to the dry-farming of Zinfandel grapes, the vines tend to be deeper to find the nutrients they need.  Consequently, the flavor is more concentrated and intense.

The color in the glass is medium opaque and garnet color.  In the nose, the smell is of berries and coca.

In the mouth, the taste up front is fruity – strawberries and blueberries with a chocolate and vanilla finish.  Moderate tannins with a good grip.

Pair this with Barbeque such as slow-cooked pork.

About Fred Tregaskis & Summit Wine Cellars

Fred Tregaskis first developed a passion for wine during his art school years, when he worked in the New York’s Hudson Valley vineyards. Years later, after working for a national wine magazine, he was given the opportunity to design and build a 28,000-bottle cellar for Lespinasse Restaurant at the St. Regis Hotel in New York—and in the process Summit Wine Cellars took root.

Tregaskis and Summit Wine Cellars have created dramatic custom wine cellars for clients throughout the world, from Maine to California, and Bangalore to Buenos Aries.

Tregaskis also writes about wine, conducts tastings and hosts a radio show on wine for NPR station WHDD/Robin Hood Radio based in Sharon Conn.
