A Moment In Wine Show 406 – Quinta da Oliveirinha Reserva Tinto 2015 – Portugal Vineyards

Today in a Moment in Wine we are going to Portugal. For some reason it’s an area that has been largely ignored by American wine drinkers, and deserves a much closer look. The Douro region of Portugal, long famous for the production of port wine, is the oldest officially recognized demarcation and regulated wine growing region in the world having been established in 1756 and now recognized as a Unesco World Heritage site.

The three prominent grape varieties grown there are Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinto Roiz. The wine we are tasting today is a blend of all three of these grapes grown by five generations of the Avles de Souza family.

Its color is a beautiful opaque garnet red and its aroma is of died violets or an old flower bouquet found pressed in a book.

The first impressions is of very ripe plums and dark fruit. Secondly there is a nice chocolate mid palate with savory spices and soft tannins on the velvety finish.

Over all this is a wonderful surprise and a really nice wine from Portugal. It would pair very well with a dry rubbed spicy lamb or flank steak on the grill.
